O-rings

O-Rings – Universal Technical Seals

An O-ring is one of the most widely used sealing elements in the design and manufacture of machinery and equipment. It is a circular sealing ring with a round cross-section, typically manufactured from an elastomer. Thanks to its simple geometry, low production cost, and high reliability, O-rings are used across virtually every industrial sector.

Operating Principle

An O-ring operates through elastic deformation. Once installed in a properly designed groove, the O-ring is compressed either axially or radially, creating a tight seal between the mating components.

When exposed to the pressure of the sealed medium, the O-ring is additionally forced against the walls of the groove and the mating surface. This increases the contact pressure and enhances the sealing performance. As the system pressure rises, the sealing effect is further improved, provided that the groove design, operating conditions, and elastomer properties remain within the applicable limits.

Typical Applications

  • Hydraulics and pneumatics – sealing applications in pistons, cylinders, and valves,
  • Automotive industry – fuel systems, braking systems, and air-conditioning systems,
  • Chemical industry – process installations, pipelines, and storage tanks,
  • Domestic appliances and heating technology – pumps, valves, and heat exchangers,
  • Agriculture and mining – heavy-duty machinery and equipment operating under demanding conditions.
